Lots of people have been sold green ‘foxy lady’ palms in the past, that eventually turn out growing up into standard foxtails. When you germinated the seeds of the foxy lady and the foxtail did you plant them at the same time? My big green one enjoys full sun however and is the fastest growing palm in my landscape and I have hundreds of palms in the ground. These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it’s nearly impossible to overwater them. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun.
The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. It PROVES that it is a true foxy lady,as foxtails are almost never variegated. I’ve got several foxtails (probably too many, but it was the first “exotic” tree that I really liked), some common King palms, and some Kentias. Foxy Lady palms are incredibly fast growing palms and I think yours has a fighting chance if you get it in the ground ASAP and keep it’s rootball watered. It never ceases to amaze me how little water rootbound palms in pots get, even if you soak them everyday.
I’m no geneticist, but I’ve heard F2 hybrids of anything can be hugely variable with dominant traits ranging from either parent. Also how f2 compares to f1 on their cold hardiness aswell as growth rate. I have an f2 and am wondering how the look of the palm compares to f1. A guy in my area has them for sale pick up at 200 for a baby 1 gallon pot , he had 4 now he has 3 , i got one today and I am looking forward to watching it grow

- I used a 4 foot bamboo stick I bought at Home Depot and tied it to the broken leaf.
- The collection has a few standard green Foxies, and a Variegated specimen whose crown receives full sun.
- They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable.
- Time will tell with my original plant…

That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang? I used a 4 foot bamboo stick I bought at Home Depot and tied it to the broken leaf. Mine’s established and I still water it almost daily.
F1 vs f2 foxy lady
That thing is so root bound that you need to do slow drip like they do or just plant it. Most likely a resold Rancho Soledad plant or a Florida import from Sparkman. But if there is actually “zero” movement, your palm is probably already dead. Even in the slowest sickliest palm, you should notice some movement of the spear – even 1/8 of an inch in a week assures that your palm is still alive.

Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger ” seeder ” at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded.

The collection has a few standard green Foxies, and a Variegated specimen whose crown receives full sun. FULL DISCLOSURE…these are not photos of my palms, nor did I take these photos. What’s the difference between the variegated and the green ? There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
I am good with the outcome either way, but if you really want to rid yourself of that ‘ugly’ plant,I am ready to adopt. I would LOVE to own that ‘ugly’ palm. These looked to be well grown. I have 3-7g (one slight variegation) I have 3-3g (one slight variegation)
This is a holy grail palm for many of us PTers. Going to a spot in the Los Angeles area If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come.

If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm – Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed. Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree? Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.
- I had about 7 seeds so I just planted them all, one popped.
- That is how you can tell the difference between foxtail and Foxy Lady hybrid.
- David the light must be playing tricks in the photo, this palm has zero variegation.
- From what I understand, this tree has been in the pot all along and was not recently potted from a field grown specimen.
- If so did they sprout around the same time frame?

Hybrid palms for sale 1gal sizes
Been in pots in the greenhouse for a couple years, very hard to tell. Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time. Wow that looks like a lot of growth for 6 months since planting.
If you meant the spear has not moved at all, then your palm was in trouble from day one. You said, “I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth.” Repeat the kelp extract/ water mix in 2 weeks. I was advised by the seller to apply a kelp extract/ water mix, then heavy water every other day, with superthrive/ water every five days. I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn’t be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped) Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles.
From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the foxy gold very smooth Vechis fiber. Here is the 5th seed that failed float test. I picked up a few seed that was on the ground while taking pics.
Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed?
