“Hello, I’m Elene from “Number Ninjas”. I have several years of experience working with children and a little something about me is that I’m majoring in psychology, I spend my free time knitting and diving deep into classical literature, and I also have a genuine passion and commitment to teaching and nurturing children, as Dostoevsky once said: “ the soul is healed by being with children”
Mental maths is not only about numbers, it offers many benefits for children’s development, and what I especially strive for in my classes is to build skills that expand beyond the classroom, and help children navigate this world. Firstly it cultivates a practical skillset that children can apply in everyday situations, for example quickly calculating the prices while shopping for their parent’s weekly groceries 😀 I also have many examples of how my classes help kids with time management and self-esteem. One of my students told me she could do homework, attend after-class activities and spend time with her friends in one day. And of course, children love to show off this superpower of calculating difficult numbers which helps raise their self-esteem and become confident. I remember One of my students was very shy and quiet in class, and after some time, his parents were pleasantly surprised their child became more active and engaged in school, he did great not only in mathematics but also improved drastically in other subjects.
People often ask me if children get bored with calculating these endless numbers for 90 minutes, but my students love working with me because I make learning an exciting adventure rather than a chore. using interactive lessons with engaging challenges, I can turn numbers into fascinating puzzles.
I would like to emphasize that my goal is to help develop a child’s abilities, and I think that the best way to achieve that is to make the environment safe and comforting, I never judge a child for making a mistake because I strongly believe children should never be afraid to make mistakes but rather see them as an opportunity to learn and develop.
There are these two interesting terms in psychology: growth mindset and fixed mindset, I’ve seen a lot of adults with the latter, the fixed mindset they avoid taking great opportunities because of this overwhelming fear of making a mistake, they believe if they do so it will mean that they are less intelligent or less capable. I don’t want my students to miss out on opportunities I want them to tackle obstacles fearlessly and always have a growth mindset, which means they will value effort and hard work above anything else, and they won’t be afraid to make mistakes because their goal will be to learn and to do better next time.
I love being a teacher because I get to inspire my student’s young minds, it brings me joy to see them motivated and curious. every child is a different kind of flower and all together, they make this world a beautiful garden.
